Television Innovations: My people and I had the opportunity to change TV for all time, back in the
70's and 80's, and here is a list of the more visible changes we made. Each week we will show and tell the story of a different innovation:1. Adult material, comedy, drama and interviews: we demonstrated that
you could program these shows for adults, and they would watch. Certain shows also broke down the barriers to "adult" programming, I'm not so sure that was a great thing.... 2. 1st cable TV listing, and then the
first Cable/Network TV guide, called "Total TV" 3. We introduced the "control room look" to TV 4. The first commercially released Video Single 5. The first weekly medical TV series where you could call and
get help.....which grew into 6. The Infomercial, developed quite by accident. 7. The Two tier Commercial: a commercial that had to be seen twice to be completely seen.
8. The first use of hand held cameras as a standard in the Studio..... 9. Point Of View amusement rides, starting with the Roller Coaster 10. Commercial Public Access... People like Jim Chladek and ETC Studios, Efrom Allen, Henry Bornstein, Eowyn Kessler, Valerie Hasley, and Bill Porter: These were among that notorious band of Innovators, that together moved
Public Access from the basement at Time Warner, to a building that now stands on it's own.....From a part of a cable charter, to an indemand source of programming that spread across the country.... By generating
programming that people would tune in to see, we showed the networks the writing on the wall... |
